Remembering Jim Schwartz in Detroit
The Lions fired Jim Schwartz today after compiling a 29-51 in five seasons as head coach. Schwartz may best be remembered for this postgame tussle with Niners coach Jim Harbaugh.
For the last LLOD of 2013, I’m choosing a personal fave – Summer Rae. She is not only a WWE diva but also used to play for the Chicago Bliss of the Lingerie Football League.
Since you asked, my favorite 2013 sports moment was this dugout speech David Ortiz gave the Red Sox during Game 4 of the World Series.
My Second Favorite 2013 Sports Moment
Patrick Roy gets into a heated shouting match with Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau during his first game as coach of the Avalanche. No idea why I enjoyed this so much but I did.
The Price is Right Moment of the Year
That may be an overstatement since I don’t watch The Price is Right, but this woman’s reaction to winning a $157,000 car (the biggest prize in the show’s history) is tremendous (reaction at 5:35 mark of video).

RIP, Uncle Phil
James Avery, better known as Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, died on Tuesday. Here’s a look back at his funniest Fresh Prince moments.
Orson Welles once said, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” For Ray Allen, style is a tailored suit. For Dwight Howard, it’s a polo shirt and purse. For LeBron James … well the shirt speaks for itself. Wherever you stand, here’s a look at the NBA’s best “going to the arena” fashion so far this season.
The late Tommy Morrison, who starred in Rocky V, would have turned 45 today. Here’s the final fight scene between Rocky and Morrison’s character, Tommy Gunn.
In four seasons at Riverside ( Calif.) Polytechnic High, Miller led the Bears to a 132-4 record, California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section 4A titles in 1980, ’81 and ’82 and to the first CIF statewide 4A championship last year. She holds the CIF records for most points in a career (3,405), a season (1,156) and a game (105). Her 37.5-point average as a junior is also a record. She hit her 105 points last January in a 179-15 win over Norte Vista High, surpassing her previous high of 77, set the season before against the same team.
But that scoring mark wasn’t her most memorable accomplishment; two of those 105 points came on a one-handed breakaway dunk. That gave her two dunks in her career—the other was also against Norte Vista. Those two dunks have made her a watershed figure in the history of the women’s game. As far as anyone knows, Miller is the only woman ever to jam in organized competition. So she’s much more than a basketball star—she’s an attraction, something women’s college hoops has sorely needed since the colorful Lieberman departed in 1980.
Heat guard Dwyane Wade misses a wide open layup during last night’s game against Golden State. He should look to Tim Duncan and Patrick Ewing for consolation.

Joe Namath on Playoff Pressure
“I spent the nights before the Jets’ two biggest games last year — for the [1968] AFL championship and the Super Bowl — with girls. But I don’t consider that bad or foolish of me. [….] The night before a game, I prepare myself both mentally and physically for the next day. I think a ballplayer has to be relaxed to play well; and if that involves being with a girl that night, he should do it.” - Joe Namath in a 1969 Playboy interview (check out Bookish for more words of wisdom from football’s greats).
It’s Howie Long’s 54th birthday. What better way to celebrate than with a photo of him giving Mel Gibson a fireman’s carry during the 1986 filming of Lethal Weapon. For more classic sports pics, follow the SI Vault on Twitter. While you’re at it, follow me on Twitter as well as SI’s Extra Mustard.
SI.com: Let’s start with a health question I always wonder about. When it’s mid-August and you’re 2-3 months away from training camp. What motivates you to work out?
Al Horford: For me, I have that edge about myself. I don’t ever want to get sloppy or else I know I’ll look foolish out there. That’s what motivates me and gets me going in the summer when I’m just sitting by the pool or couch. I just know I have to work out before I can enjoy my day.
SI.com: Let’s talk about this season. How is it different playing with Paul Millsap as opposed to Josh Smith? He’s obviously a different type of player.
Al Horford: They’re both really good defenders. I’m getting used to playing with Paul more and more. He knows how to play the game and is usually at right place at right time. He’s solid and reliable. The biggest thing for me is just developing that chemistry, whether it’s Josh or Paul.
SI.com: Do you know why Millsap is never really a part of the conversation about the league’s best power forwards?
Al Horford: I think it has a lot to do with his character. He’s low key and a quiet guy for the most part and people have him under the radar. I think people are going to start talking more about him, especially this year because he’s really a great player.
SI.com: Switching gears, you roomed with Joakim Noah at Florida. What was that like? Did he sleep at all?
Al Horford: You know, people think Joakim is the same way off the court as when he’s on it. But Joakim is real laid back. We’d basically watch reality TV shows on VH1 or sleep. He would sleep a lot. If we weren’t in the gym or practice, he was pretty much in the room hanging out. He is laid back but on the court is when he revs it up and you see this crazy side of him.
SI.com: Did you play video games and see that competitive side of him?
Al Horford:Corey [Brewer] and Taurean [Green] were the gamers. Joakim and I would just instigate them. He’d take one side, I’d take the other and we’d be just trash talk and go back and forth while they played. We weren’t huge gamers so we’d just instigate and hang out.
SI.com: You grew up in the Dominican. Why didn’t you play baseball?
Al Horford: My mom wanted me to play baseball. She didn’t want me to play basketball. I started out young and was a good baseball player. I thought that’s what I wanted to play. But then I started watching my dad’s [Tito Horford] basketball games and right away, I was like this is what I want to do. So when I told my mom that she was devastated. She tried to get me to play both sports but I was like, ‘Nah I’ll stick with basketball.’
SI.com: Did you have a ‘Welcome to the NBA’ moment as a rookie?
Al Horford: My first preseason game was against the Heat and Shaq was still on the team. I was coming to the league thinking I would play power forward but they wanted me to play the five because Josh [Smith] was there. So my first game was against Shaq and and he comes up to me at halfcourt before the game, gives me a hug and is like, ‘Hey young fella. Welcome to the NBA.’ And he was being so nice and I was thinking, ‘Wow that’s Shaq. That was so awesome.’ So on the first play he backs me up into the post and elbowed me right in my forehead. I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ It didn’t bleed or anything but it knocked me way back. They called an offensive foul but it hurt and that was kinda my welcome to the NBA moment, in the post trying to guard Shaq.
SI.com: Do you miss having Zaza Pachulia? It’s your first year without him and I know he was a big body up front who could help protect you.
Al Horford: For sure. Not only on the court but we are really good friends off the court. His family and my family have a really good relationship.
SI.com: Are there one or two guys on schedule you know will be a handful?
Al Horford: A guy like Dirk [Nowitzki] is hard because he shoots the ball really well but he can drive too and it’s not like he can explode by you but he’s the kind of guy who will keep you on your toes with all his pump fakes. And even a guy like DeMarcus Cousins – he’s a good player and can do the same. He’s not super explosive but really hard to guard.
SI.com: Okay, so the game is over and you get back home. What shows are on your DVR?
Al Horford: I love Boardwalk Empire. I love America Dad and Family Guy.
SI.com: Are you glad Brian is back?
Al Horford: I’m a few weeks behind so don’t spoil it.
SI.com: Lastly, I dug into our photo archives for some old pics of your dad. Tell me what comes to mind when you see these.

John Williams, Dale Brown and Tito Horford :: George Tiedemann/SI
Al Horford: That’s hilarious. I remember my parents always talk to me about the LSU days and the short time he was there. There was all this hype when he was going in with Dale Brown and everything. So seeing this picture it’s just really funny. You know I’m looking at my dad’s body type and mine and it’s funny because they’re so similar.

Tito Horford :: Bill Frakes/SI
Al Horford: Those shorts, man. I’ve talked to him about that but he’ll say, ‘Hey man, that’s how we used to do it.’ But 20 years from now, I’ll have kids and they’ll be laughing at me for what I’m wearing now.
Al Horford: That was the cool look. The flat top. That was the way to go back then. He used to curl it up at the top and put a perm on it. He’d put gel on it. He used to play around with that pretty good.”
SI.com: Do you remember meeting any players when you were younger?
Al Horford: My dad played with Dominican National Team so I met Felipe Lopez, who played at St. John’s. I used to carry his bag and play 1-on-1 with him. He works for the NBA now so every time he sees me, it’s hard for him to believe that I was that little kid running around the gym all the time.
SI.com: How old were you when you first beat you dad at 1-on-1?
Al Horford: You know the funny thing with him is that once I got to be a sophomore in high school, he would never want to play me 1-on-1. He’d rather play me in HORSE. We’d play as a family with my brother who’s at Michigan now. Every time we get together in the gym, we’re having these shooting battles. He used to beat me pretty good in high school playing HORSE all the time but when I got to college, things changed. Now I get him all the time.

Seinfeld Video Of The Day
Jerry Seinfeld took questions on Reddit today and here’s what he said about Kramer’s “look away, I’m hideous” scene.
“I can still remember how brutally funny that was to me. The thing about the show is that you have to realize that I had to look into the faces of those people, six inches away, so if you think Kramer is funny on TV, imagine his real face six inches from your nose, how funny that is. You can’t imagine. It’s impossible not to laugh. So I would.”

SI.com: Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do?
Lauren Hanley: I’m from Fort Lauderdale and I currently work at a dispensary in Sherman Oaks. I’m 20-years-old and I also do some modeling in my spare time.
SI.com: You’re quickly becoming an internet sensation. Was that the plan when you started posting all these great Instagram pics? Are you friends with any other of these internet sensations? I saw you exchanging tweets with Abigail Ratchford, a Hot Clicks favorite.
Lauren Hanley: Well, thank you! When I first started posting pictures, I had no idea what a huge thing it would turn into. I know a lot of other girls from contests I’ve been in or doing shoots with multiple models. Abi is such a sweetie! I love talking to girls who also enjoy modeling because we tend to be very similar and have a lot to talk about Image may be NSFW. Clik here to view.
SI.com: On the average day, how many guys talk to you on Twitter or ask you out on a date?
Lauren Hanley: Ha ha, no comment. I am lucky to have lots of guys asking me out! It’s extremely flattering.
SI.com: You’re in the news because you were spotted leaving an LA club with Johnny Manziel. What was that like?
Lauren Hanley: Yeah, Johnny is a really sweet guy. I had never met him before but we had a great time at the club that night! My friend Courtney and I ended up hanging out with him and his friends later on after the club closed.
SI.com: What is the one movie you can watch over and over without getting sick of?
Lauren Hanley: Old School. Classic.
SI.com: Last question. If you could go on a date with any celebrity, who would it be?
Lauren Hanley: Vince Vaughn. One of the funniest men alive, I didn’t even have to think twice about this one.

The Wall Street Journal posted a ridiculous article about how Patriots coach Bill Belichick has only smiled seven times during postgame press conferences this season. I think the idea that is that Belichick is s grumpy and unhappy person — and I refuse to accept this premise. The postgame press conference isn’t Open Mic night at the Laugh Factory – it’s a time to review the game and discuss his decisions. If you want funny Belichick, watch him attempt to set the clock in his car or discuss how tiny the Red Sox players are or drop a joke about Rob Gronkowski’s health. The point is he’s funny, in his own peculiar way. As for this belief that he never smiles, I’ve put together the above gallery of a smiling Patriots coach to show that he is indeed human.

Mayor Steven Fulop declared Christopher Columbus Drive in Jersey City will be renamed “Super Bowl Drive” for the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII. I mention this for two reasons. “And so, off on his own at the big university up the interstate from his home in Brandon, Fla., near Tampa, the kid went whole hog with the Dwayne-Do or, as some teammates call it, the Lobster—burr short on top, boxed on the sides, feathered oh-so-scraggly down the back in the fashion of, uh, a crustacean’s tail.
