Kobe Goes to College

Kobe Bryant may have skipped college to play in the NBA, but he was the big man on campus last night at Boston College. The Lakers guard made a surprise appearance at the school and took in a few classes. Of course, the students went crazy and some posted pics on Twitter and Instagram, which I’ve put into the gallery above.

Three Important Hockey Notes

Jesse Vetter, a goalie for the U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team, has been forced to repaint her new mask by the International Olympic Committee. Vetter has a copy of the U.S. Constitution on the back plate of her helmet, which breaks the “No writing of any kind to promote the country” rule. Vetter also will be forced to remove the Olympic rings from the chin and her last name from the back plate as well because the IOC viewed it as self-promotional. On a less controversial note, the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League will pay tribute to CBC announcer Don Cherry by wearing plaid jersey tops with black pants.  Meanwhile, the ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors announced its first-ever “Undie Sunday” to take plane on April 13. When the Condors score their first goal, fans are supposed to throw their underwear on the ice.

LLOD/Hot Clicks Giveaway

Did you know that all fans who attend the Super Bowl next month will find handwarmers under their seat when they arrive at MetLife Stadium? Even better, the company providing the Super Bowl handwarmers (The Northwest Company) have given five pair to give away to the Hot Clicks audience. Even better that that,  Victoria’s Secret model Erin Heatherton is promoting said handwarmers. So after you enjoy the gallery of Erin, email me (andy_gray@simail.com) the name of yesterday morning’s LLOD. The first five to correctly respond with the subject line “Handwarmers” will get them.

UPDATE (11:34 a.m.): Contest is over. Winners will be notified this afternoon. Thanks for playing.

Sports Memorabilia Updates

The Duke jersey worn by Christian Laettner when he made “The Shot” to beat the Kentucky Wildcats in the 1992 East Regional Finals sold for $119,500. Also, another piece of valuable sports memorabilia, Jim Harbaugh‘s game-worn khaki pants, can be yours for just $500.

There’s Only One Thing Left To Do…

The Chicago Bulls were expected to compete for a title this year, but they lost Derrick Rose to a season-ending injury and Luol Deng to a trade. The players, sensing management doesn’t think they have a chance to compete for a title, have started to use the movie Major League as inspiration. ”We understand it’s kind of like the movie Major League,” Taj Gibson told ESPN Chicago. ”We’ve got that mentality where we believe in the locker room. We believe in what we think. And we’re taking it one game at a time and we’re trying to get those wins hopefully to see … get a good, nice poster at the end of the year.”

The Richard Sherman Show

I fully planned to lead this morning’s Clicks with an overview of yesterday’s championship games, but then Richard Sherman erupted in his postgame interview and the internet exploded. As luck would have it Sherman wrote a first person piece for SI about the entire incident. Also of note, Forbes has 22 thoughts on Sherman’s postgame interview, while Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander expressed his disapproval in baseball terms (as did his girlfriend/friend/whatever they are/ Kate Upton). The target of Sherman’s wrath, Niners receiver Michael Crabtree, thought he got the better of the matchup, while Bucs tight end Tom Crabtree enjoyed how everyone thought he was Michael Crabtree.

As For the Games

Peyton Manning and the Broncos thoroughly outplayed the Patriots, earning Denver a trip to the Super Bowl and giving Manning’s foundation nearly $25,000 for the quarterback’s 44 pre-snap “Omaha” calls. The Broncos quarterback celebrated the victory with a postgame “Tebow.” The game’s biggest controversy was this hit on Pats cornerback Aqib Talib by Denver receiver Wes Welker, a play that Bill Belichick thought was deliberate (though it’s worth pointing out that Welker and Belichick haven’t always had the best relationship).

As for the Seahawks-Niners game, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh is always good for at least one “I’m acting like a lunatic” GIF, and here it is. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch scored another “beast mode” touchdown, which resulted in fans chucking Skittles into the end zone and receiver Golden Tate nearly catching one in his mouth. It will be a brutal offseason for San Francisco linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who not only has to deal with a tough loss but also will rehab a painful knee injury. On the plus side, he received a barrage of support from his fellow NFL players after the game. Lastly, expect to see a lot of Macklemore over the next couple weeks, with the Seahawks in the Super Bowl—and don’t expect to hear much about Aaron Hernandez, with the Patriots eliminated. But at least Hernandez has a sandwich.

WWE Diva Brie Bella held a bachelorette party, at which everyone wore fake beards in support of Bella’s fiance, Daniel Bryan. Speaking of Bryan, he was pumped about the Seahawks’ victory.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard earned the biggest win of her career on Tuesday when she defeated Ana Ivanovic in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. But her best performance was the postmatch interview, in which she was asked about her dream date. After blushing and giggling, Bouchard admitted that it would be Justin Bieber. Of course, we at SI.com have known about this for months, ever since we pestered her about it in an interview last September. Here’s a quick excerpt.

SI.com: Name a celebrity you want to meet?
Bouchard: I’m going to go with Justin Bieber. He gets so much hate, but I like some of his songs. And I respect him because he came from nothing and he became this mega-superstar and he does have talent. I don’t know if you’ve seen his movie…

SI.com: I regret to inform you that I have not.
Bouchard: Honestly, people who didn’t really like him actually were amazed at the movie. You see videos of him playing drums when he was 2 years old, and how he really became what he is. He played guitar outside of Starbucks, just trying to play and make money, and he put videos on YouTube and then finally became something. And he’s Canadian, so I support him.

SI.com: What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
Bouchard: I have a lot of those. [Long pause] Is Justin Bieber embarrassing?

The NBA 20 Years Ago

I was having a hard time finding items for P.M. Clicks curious about the state of NBA scoring in 1994 and went into the SI Vault for this little nugget from the Jan. 20, 1994 issue. At the time, the league’s three leading scorers were Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon and it looked as though a center might win the scoring title for the first time since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1972.

“So why the change? The short answer is that Michael Jordan, who won the scoring title the last seven years, finally gave someone else a chance by retiring (during that span, Moses Malone was runner-up to Jordan twice). The longer answer has to do with topflight centers’ now being almost as plentiful as outstanding shooting guards and small forwards were a few years ago. The ranks of shooting guards have been thinned by retirement ( Jordan’s) and tragedy (the deaths of Reggie Lewis and Drazen Petrovic), while age and injuries are slowing down others, such as 31-year-old Trail Blazer Clyde Drexler and 30-year-old Piston Joe Dumars. Small forwards have also been hit by the retirement of Larry Bird and the injury woes of players such as Chris Mullin of the Warriors.”

Bieber Gets His Babe?

In yesterday’s A.M. Clicks, we mentioned Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard and her admitted crush on Justin Bieber. Kobe vs. MJ

Throughout his 18-year career, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has drawn comparisons to Michael Jordan. We even created this gallery a couple of years ago to demonstrate how similar they are on the court. But who’s the better player? Phil Jackson, who coached both to NBA Championships and knows their games as well as anyone, shed some light on this debate during an appearance on Fox Sports One yesterday. When asked who’d win a head-to-head matchup between the two, Jackson chose Jordan. His baggage on the road includes a prayer rug and a special compass that points him in the direction of Mecca. Today he excuses himself and adjourns to the front porch of the guest house, where he removes his shoes, stretches out the rug, sinks to his knees and recites his noonday prayer, called the zuhr. “I am,” Olajuwon says upon completion of the prayer, ‘a man at peace.’”

Dallas Stars > Justin Bieber

bieber-fan

I really wanted to make Hot Clicks a Bieber-free zone, but the Dallas Stars put out the greatest scoreboard message of all time last night and the floodgates are open. Adidas declared they are sticking by Bieber, who signed an endorsement deal with the company in 2012, while neighbors Eric Dickerson and Keyshawn Johnson are happy that the Canadian singer finally got busted for his bad driving. Meanwhile, this “Free Bieber” sign made it onto ESPNU’s broadcast of the Penn State-Nebraska game, and DeSean Jackson, whose ex-girlfriend Chantel Jeffries was in the car with Bieber at the time of arrest, claims to have no idea what happened.

Kevin Harlan = Not an Erin Andrews Fan

Kevin Harlan, who is one of my favorite play-by-play men in sports, had some harsh words for Erin Andrews and the way she handled the Richard Sherman interview. During an appearance on  the Starkey & Mueller radio program in Pittsburgh, Harlan said of Andrews, “I don’t know if she was unprepared, her reaction was more about her than the guy. It was very odd. If you go back and look at that interview, her reaction was more like drama queenish.”

Mr. Personality

I’m back from a long weekend in Seattle. Thank you to Brett Smiley for filling in and covering all things Media Day in Tuesday’s P.M. Clicks. As you may have read, Marshawn Lynch will be one of the most important players in Sunday’s Super Bowl, but he stayed in the background yesterday and let others do the talking. SI’s Jim Trotter has a good profile of the running back and why he’s one of the most beloved players in the Seahawks locker room. I remember back in the fall of 2006, when Lynch, then a running back at Cal, commandeered an injury cart and took it for a ghost ride (a pop culture phenomenon at the time) across Memorial Stadium. I’ve collected some photos that show the lighter side of Lynch to show that he’s not always in Beast Mode.

Hot Clicks Q&A: Marshawn Lynch

$

Marshawn Lynch and Skittles are auctioning off packs of limited-edition Seattle Mix Skittles to raise money for Lynch’s Fam 1st Family Foundation. I spoke with the Seahawks back on Wednesday night to discuss ghost riding at Cal, his dog Ice’s plans for Sunday’s game, and of course, Skittles.

SI.com: So tell me about this venture with Skittles?

Marshawn Lynch: We came together on an agreement where we’re doing a limited pack of Seattle Mix Skittles and we’ll be having an auction which started today with all proceeds from the auction donated to me and my cousin’s (Joshua Johnson) foundation, which is Fam 1st Family Foundation. And, for every touchdown that I score, Skittles will donate $10,000.

SI.com: Did you get a lifetime supply of Skittles as part of the deal?

Lynch: (laughing). No, I think the fans took care of that for me.

SI.com: I saw your mom used to call them power pellets when you were little.

Lynch: Not used to. Still does. Josh knows about it, too. My mama gave him some of the same things before high school games.

SI.com: Let me ask you this. You go to a store to buy Skittles and they are out. Do you have a backup candy or do you leave and go to another store?

Lynch: Nah, I really don’t have to go to the store. The fans make sure that every time they see me or know they have an opportunity to see me, I make sure they bring plenty of Skittles.

SI.com: I saw that ESPN Sports Science feature and it looks like they actually make you better. They took all these measurements and showed that your performance improved. Do you feel like you get more energy?

Lynch: No I don’t. It’s really a mind over matter thing. It was something I did back in Pop Warner. My stomach used to get upset and we tried everything: Alka Seltzer. Pepto … all kinds of things. And then for some reason my mama just told me, “Eat this candy.” I forgot what candy it was that she gave me but it settled my stomach. So I told her I liked it but it takes too long to eat it. So then the next game she came with a big-ass bag of Skittles and was like, “Here you can chew these down real fast.” And that’s how it happened. It was just the candy of her choice.

SI.com: Whose idea was it to come up with the Seattle Mix?

Lynch: I think it was just due. Me and Skittles have not been affiliated but we did some talks with them to try and see if we could get something done and the timing was right. I’m pretty sure some marketing genius came up with it. The bag of the Skittles actually looks pretty good.

SI.com: Did you have any idea Seattle was so crazy before you moved there?

Lynch: Actually I did know what I was getting into but I didn’t know about the 12th Man and all that.

SI.com: Do you think any people still hate you from your game-winning run against UW in 2006?

Lynch: Yeah, you know what? There’s probably some true UW fans who hate me but they put that to the side. I have a couple family members who go to school there — Marcus Peters and DiAndre Campbell right out of Oakland so I got love for UW.

SI.com: Would you say the Ghost Ride on the injury cart was your favorite college experience?

Lynch: My favorite college experience was probably leaving college. But the Ghost Ride was up there, too.

SI.com: What was your favorite run – the Beast Mode run against the Saints or the overtime winner against UW?

Lynch: Not to take away from either of those runs but it would probably be the run I had in the Silver Bowl when I was in high school.

SI.com: Let’s talk about Buffalo. Do you have good memories, or is it disappointing that you couldn’t lead them to the playoffs?

Lynch: No, there’s no hard feelings for Buffalo. I still have a place in my heart for them. That’s where I got drafted to and I still have family over there, my brother Fred Jackson and my little brother C.J. Spiller who I still keep contact with. There’s no hard feelings and I wish the best for them.

SI.com: I read this story about you owning a dog when you were in Buffalo and the homeowners made you get rid of it because it wasn’t within the rules. What exactly happened there?

Lynch: No, it wasn’t that it wasn’t in the rules. I guess the homeowner’s association didn’t approve of the type of dog I had, which was a baby pit.

SI.com: Do you have a dog now?

Lynch: I do

SI.com: What’s its name?

Lynch: Ice.

SI.com: What does he do while you play? Does he watch your games?

Lynch: Haha, no. He’s out doing his doggie dog thing, living in his doggie dog world. You feel me?

SI.com: I feel you. When the season’s over and you want to forget football, what do you do to relax?

Lynch: I like to go home and get involved in my community. ASAP. So that means the day after I am done, me and my cousin Josh will hit the streets. We’ll probably be running into someone’s elementary, junior high or high school, or going to somebody’s youth development center so we can find ways to get ours up and running to make sure that ours is running smoothly. With us being the president and vice-president, we have some obligations to some people to keep this thing going and up until this point I feel we’ve been doing pretty good with our foundation. I mean, we’ve seen a lot of success from it. We have guys who came through our foundation who actually played in the league and some guys in college who hit the business world. We have guys all over that are making a change for the better and sometimes that’s hard to see in our area. Especially from our neighborhoods.

SI.com: Last question. Do you have a prediction for Sunday?

Lynch: I just hope we have one more point so we’ll win.

Q&A: Marshawn Lynch

The biggest Super Bowl story of the past couple days has been Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch‘s aversion to the media and their reaction to his silence. I was able to get Lynch for 15 minutes on the phone last night (thanks to my good friends at Skittles) and he couldn’t have been cooler. Here’s a link to the entire interview.

A.J. McCarron :: Greg Nelson/SI

A.J. McCarron :: Greg Nelson/SI

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is the news spokesman for AXE Hair Gel. McCarron sat down with SI.com to discuss his swimsuit model girlfriend, haters on Twitter and (most importantly) his hair.

SI.com: So tell me what brings you here today.

AJ McCarron: I teamed up with Axe to promote their new hair gels. It’s such a blessing to work with such a great company that has such a good reputation. It allows me to have a new look with the different types of gels that came out. They have a spiked-type look and a clean cut. The look I’m rocking today is the messy look if you like getting out of bed and just pushing it aside and going. It’s a good opportunity for me to have a new image going into the next chapter of my life.

SI.com: I know you’re prepping for the draft. What’s your typical day like?

McCarron: I work 13 hours a day. We wake up at 6:30, go eat breakfast, then work out – usually throwing with some footwork drills thrown in. After that, we work on our core. Then we eat lunch. After lunch, we go into speed training and running. Then we do throwing again and eat dinner. After dinner we go into board work and break down film, talk about defenses and stuff like that. After that, we rehab our body and get a massage. Then we eat dinner again and call it a night.

SI.com: Who’s the we?

McCarron: There’s a bunch of us. Kevin Norwood, who’s one of my teammates. Gabe Jackson from Mississippi State. Marquise Maze. Logan Kilgore. There’s a mixture of guys.

SI.com: I saw you tweet out a photo of them today.

McCarron: Yup, that’s them.

SI.com: Is there a current NFL quarterback you try to emulate?

McCarron: I think I play the game like Tom Brady, when it comes to how I move in the pocket. He was underrated coming out of college and I feel the same way. Hopefully when I get my opportunity, I’ll be able to take it and run with it.

SI.com: Have you had a chance to meet Bill Belichick? I know he’s close to Nick Saban.

McCarron: I have had a chance to meet him. He’s come to practice and watched us during the summer. That’s actually how I got teamed up to talk with Tom. I talk to him every once in a while.

SI.com: And what does Brady say to you?

McCarron: Just to have fun. After his loss to the Broncos, I told him he had a nice season and he wrote back and said the same to me, and that he’d see me soon. I try and get some help from guys like him and the Manning’s.

SI.com: I was surprised to see the tattoo on your chest. Tell me about all your ink.

McCarronThey all mean something to me. I like tattoos and I think that’s one of the things that helps me out. I can play the clean look and keep them covered up or go with the skater look and show them off. I’m my own self so I try to be different.

SI.com: Will you get a tattoo of the team that drafts you?

McCarron: No. You never put something like that on your body because you never know how long that relationship will last.

SI.com: Have you gotten recognized in New York City at all this week?

McCarron: Yeah, actually. I do which is weird. This morning I was surprised as I was just walking and a couple guys came up and said, “Congrats on a great season and a great career.” Another couple guys said “Roll Tide.” It’s kind of weird going places and still being noticed.

SI.com: How are you holding up in this freezing weather?

McCarron: I’m doing pretty good. One thing I’m exciting about is to go out and see how my hair holds up with the 24 hour hold on this.

SI.com: Are you heading to Sunday’s game?

McCarron: No. I fly back Friday morning and have a training session at 12:30. But I do have Sunday off so we’ll all go eat somewhere and watch the game.

SI.com: Do you have a prediction?

McCarron: I’m pulling for – and it’s not anything against either team as they’re both great organizations and teams – but I have to pull for Eric Decker and the Broncos. We’re both signed to the same agency and both are part of the AXE Hair Gel team. It’s a great opportunity for us to both be teamed up with great companies.

SI.com: Did you see his GQ spread?

McCarron: I did not. I know he likes to take a lot of pictures.

SI.com: You should check it out. Switching topics, do you get frustrated when you tweet something in jest and it gets blown out of proportion?

McCarron: No, I don’t get frustrated. i think it’s just funny they can take nothing and make it into something. But that’s the world we live in today.

SI.com: Do you have a favorite TV show right now?.

McCarron: Heck, yeah. Duck Dynasty. I’m all about Duck Dynasty. I actually went out and bought seasons 1-5. Every night I plop down and put them in. I definitely watch that for a little while until I fall asleep each night.

SI.com: Have you met any celebrities you never thought you’d get a chance to meet?

McCarron: Derek Jeter, for sure. I grew up a big Yankees fan and the fact that I got to meet him before the LSU game was just awesome for me. And pretty surreal.

SI.com: So I have a few photos I want to get your two cents on. Tell me what comes to mind when you look at them.

McCarron: I just think it’s funny. There’s a new article up every day that says we’re broken up or a picture like that. I think that’s what makes our relationship so great. We stick with each other through the thick and thin and she’s my best friend.

McCarronn: Looking at this, you automatically look to see what formation we were in. What type of defense they’re in. I’m a quarterback so it’s just second nature to me.

100 Best Super Bowl Photos

The SI.com photo department has been hard at work this week creating (at last count) 21 galleries – from Celebs at Super Bowl Parties to Worst Halftime Shows to The History of Media Day – all of which can be found on our NFL Galleries Page. My personal favorite is SI’s 100 Best Super Bowl Photos, from which I’ve selected some choice cuts for the gallery above.

This may be the dumbest story of Super Bowl week. Also my favorite.

NFL Trivia With Nina Agdal

Lovely Lady Announcement

I accidentally stumbled upon a bunch of photos for the 2014 Swimsuit Issue (on sale Feb.18!). I can confirm that my request to go all nude for the 50th anniversary was denied. On the bright side, I can announce that SwimDaily will reveal the identity of a rookie swimsuit model every day leading up to the issue’s release. Seeing that the former Rookie of the Year Award winners include Chrissy Teigen (2010), Kate Upton (2011), Nina Agdal (2012) and Hot Clicks favorite Kate Bock (2013), this is an exciting development. Speaking of exciting, the first official photos of the 2014 issue – featuring Hannah Davis – have been released

I will send them to the first two people who email me (andy_gray@simail.com) the name of Marshawn Lynch‘s charity, which he mentioned several times in my interview with him yesterday.

AJ McCarron Discusses This Photo

I interviewed AJ McCarron earlier this week and couldn’t resist asking him about this photo. He laughed for a couple of seconds and then said, “I just think it’s funny. There’s a new article up every day that says we’re broken up or a picture like that. I think that’s what makes our relationship so great. We stick with each other through the thick and thin and she’s my best friend.”
