Athletes In Wax

Cristiano Ronaldo attended the unveiling of his wax figure at Madrid’s Museo De Cera museum on Saturday. And since there’s nothing more awkward then someone standing next to their own wax figure, here’s a whole gallery of such pics.

Punters and Speedos

Michigan State punter Mike Sadler likes his Speedos and offered to wear one if defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi wins the Broyles Award (given to CFB’s best assistant). Sadler still has a while to go before he matches the Speedo brilliance of fellow punter Zoltan Mesko.

Important Pro Bowl News

Did you know each NFL team sends one cheerleader to the Pro Bowl? Here are this year’s selections.

Lovely Lady Roundup

I saw Spring Breakers over the weekend. I did not enjoy it. It was overly artsy and hard to follow. But I do think Ashley Benson deserves some props … UK model Rosie Jones has a new calendar out – and it’s spectacular … Happy 36th birthday, Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Welcome to Chess Boxing

Yes, this is a real thing, and it’s happening in Russia.

15 Years Ago This Week

In the Dec. 7, 1998 issue of SI, Tom Verducci discussed baseball’s record-breaking free agent spending spree and proclaimed Anaheim’s pickup of Mo Vaughn as the best signing. Whoops.

“Mo Vaughn, Anaheim Angels ($13.3 million per year for six years). Think G.I. Joe, an action figure with leadership ability and a proven track record. Now Anaheim can trade centerfielder Jim Edmonds for pitching help and face September, its annual Waterloo, with confidence. Vaughn and the Angels are the only free-agent fit thus far that can turn a contender into a winner.”

Drew Bledsoe Got Robbed

No, I’m not talking about how Bill Belichick didn’t give Drew Bledsoe his starting job back when he returned from injury in the 2001 season. Bledsoe was actually robbed while he was at a dinner for a kid’s event in his home state of Washington.

The World’s Most Overpaid Actors

panthers

In November, Forbes valued the Florida Panthers franchise at $240 million. They may need to dip into those funds for better replacement glass panes. During the third period of Tuesday’s game against Detroit, center Nick Bjugstad shattered the glass behind the net with an errant shot. When the arena crew came to install a new pane of glass, the protective paper covering wouldn’t come off and they were forced to leave it up for the remainder of the game.

Two Michael Jordan Tributes

A University of Toledo medical school student used his beard to pay homage to Michael Jordan. Unfortunately, he has a while to go before he catches up with this fan’s ridiculous back tribute to His Airness.

This is Bill Cowher at the end of Super Bowl XL, smiling after leading the Steelers to a championship after 14 years as head coach. Lovely Lady Of The Day

I received this great Holiday greeting from SI Swimsuit model (and Hot Clicks fave) Genevieve Morton and decided to make her today’s LLOD.

Get These Two a Room

The official Twitter accounts of the Blazers and Suns had a flirt-fest last night.

Introducing the McDantzler

Watts Dantzler had one of the best tweets of 2013 when he bravely battled a tornado with an American flag and rifle. The offensive lineman from Georgia may have outdone himself with this homemade McDonalds concoction, which he dubbed “The McDantzler.” It consists of double cheese burgers, meat from a mcchicken, fries, Ranch and buffalo sauce.

This Was Weird

When we last heard from Shawne Merriman, he was at WWE’s Performance Center trying his hand at professional wrestling. On Tuesday, the former Chargers linebacker had one of the strangest live TV moments of the year when he walked out during the middle of an interview with ESPN’s Dan LeBatard and Bomani Jones.

SI Vault Photo Of The Day

Vince Young :: Robert Beck/SI

Vince Young :: Robert Beck/SI

As Texas football fans face an uncertain future, we look back to the 2006 Rose Bowl when Vince Young led the Longhorns to a national championship with this eight-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Young threw for 267 yards, ran for 200 more and accounted for three touchdowns as the Longhorns stunned USC 41-38 to win the 2005 national title. For more classic athlete pics, follow the SI Vault on Twitter. We’re Just Here To Do The Super Bowl Shuffle

On this day in 1985, the Chicago Bears Shufflin’ Crew release the hit song, Superbowl Shuffle. I’ll have a big gallery in P.M. Clicks of the video shoot but here’s the final product, in all it’s mid-’80s cheesiness.

Hope Solo Rips the Ponytail Posse

U.S. women’s goalie Hope Solo, who’s never shied from controversy, ripped Julie Foudy on Twitter after Foudy named Briana Scurry her choice for starting goalie on the honorary US Soccer’s All-Time Best XI team, which will be announced later this month.

McCutchen Scores a Bride

Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen proposed to his girlfriend Maria Hanslovan during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She rejected him and instead proclaimed her love for Alex Rodriguez, who then appeared out of nowhere and nailed McCutchen with a steel chair on the back of the head. Just kidding. She said yes. I’ve been watching too much wrestling.

Lovely Lady Round-Up

Behati Prinsloo was one of many models to walk the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show but haven’t heard much about her so thought I’d showcase her in today’s gallery …  Emmy Rossum looks spectacular in the latest issue of EsquireVanessa Hudgens wants to be back in Jamaica right now.

You Could Not Have Been More Wrong

In 2009, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin told Alshon Jeffrey that he’d be pumping gas for the rest of his life if he chose South Carolina over the Vols. Jeffrey chose the Gamecocks and did all right for himself.

Ridiculous Lawsuit of the Day

A Clippers fan is filing a $5 million lawsuit against the team for spamming his cell phone. I’d definitely expect a settlement with a generous owner like Donald Sterling.

Christmas for Sneaker Lovers

Adidas is bringing back its Crazy 1 sneaker, which will be available the day after Christmas. It’ll have competition as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant all come out with new Nikes on the same day.

Athletes Becoming Thespians

Former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher will become the latest Chicago athlete to appear on stage when he appears in a production of A Christmas Carol later this month. Happy Birthday to Roy

Justin Timberlake stopped his concert in Indianapolis last night to lead a Happy Birthday sing-along for Pacers center Roy Hibbert.

Make Him Sportsman of the Year!

SI writers and athletes have been handing out their choices for 2013 Sportsman of the Year for the past couple weeks so I figure it’s time I throw my hat in the ring. I nominate Christopher McComas, an IT specialist at Marshall University who saw on Twitter that the University of North Dakota was looking for a new head football coach and decided to apply. In his application, McComas highlighted his wealth of video game experience and drew up a nine-page Power Point presentation explaining how he can make UND a national power by throwing the ball all the time.

What a Guy

In a related story, Randolph won the November Kia Community Assist Award earlier that day. For a really good profile of Randolph, check out this piece Jonathan Abrams wrote for Grantland last year.

Remembering MJ’s Flu Game

I mentioned in A.M. Hot Clicks that the sneakers Michael Jordan wore during Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals (The Flu Game) sold for $104,000 at auction. I searched through the archives and found some great photos from the game itself. For those who don’t recall, the series was tied 2-2 and a flu-ridden Jordan scored 38 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists in Chicago’s 90-88 victory at Utah. The Bulls would go onto win the title in Game 6.

Not really but she did post this amazing photo of herself in a Longhorns jersey and bikini bottom.

Bert Blyleven > John Henson

Bucks big man John Henson made a strong statement against the NCAA with this t-shirt. Call me crazy but I prefer the good old days when athletes such as Bert Blyleven wore simple t-shirts without any political message.

Lovely Lady Of The Day, Throwback Edition

Based on the success of Heather Locklear’s Throwback LLOD last month, I decided to use Thursday’s P.M. Clicks as an opportunity to showcase a lovely lady from yesteryear. My first choice is Nicole Eggert, who not only stole the show in Charles in Charge and Baywatch, but also starred in the criminally underrated Blown Away.

Seahawks Fans vs. 49ers Fans

Last week, Seattle fans raised $1,800 to have a “Go Hawks” banner fly over Candlestick Park Sunday’s Seahawks-49ers game. To get revenge, a group of San Francisco fans have pledged nearly $8,000 to erect a pro-49ers billboard within a half-mile of Century Link Field. Better yet, the billboard only costs $7,000 so all additional funds will be given to charity.

NFL Roundup

Another Sunday, another disaster for Tony Romo. The Cowboys quarterback threw two interceptions in the final three minutes as the Cowboys were edged out by the Packers, 37-36. Romo’s performance was so bad, even the Twitter account of the Atlanta Hawks took a shot at him. In other NFL news, Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles made his fantasy owners extremely happy, Dolphins field goal holder Brandon Fields will never live this  down and Falcons running back Steven Jackson destroyed Redskins defensive back Josh Wilson on a two-yard touchdown run. Also of note, the Buccaneers attempted a trick play off a kickoff with disastrous results, Bengals punter Kevin Huber suffered a fractured jaw on this hit from Steelers special teamer Terence Gavin and Tom Brady was not in a pleasant mood during the postgame press conference. Buzzfeed has all of Week 15′s best GIFs.

Seahawks Shut Out Giants, Seattle Car Dealer Loses $420,000

The NBA’s Wild Night

What a night in the Association. Heat teammates LeBron James and Mario Chalmers nearly came to blows during the Pacers-Heat game but were able to pull out a victory on a controversial non-call at the end of the game. Knicks guard J.R. Smith attempted 17 three-pointers (making five) and Andrea Bargnani took perhaps the season’s dumbest shot in the Knicks’ 107-101 double-overtime victory over the Bucks. Bobcats guard Kemba Walker defeated the Raptors on a overtime buzzer-beater while Wizards coach Randy Wittman took a ball to the face during Washington’s victory over Brooklyn. And to cap off a crazy night, Shaquille O’Neal, now a minority owner of Sacramento, was booted from his seats twice during the Kings-Hawks game at Phillips Arena.

Lovely Lady Of The Day

Ashley Sky and Rockets forward Chandler Parsons teamed up last week to shoot an ad for Buffalo Pro with Chandler Parsons, the newest marketing program for Buffalo David Bitton. I spoke with Parsons right after the shoot to discuss his life off the court. “I’m very excited to partner with Buffalo Jeans,” Parsons said. “I’ve gotten to know the brand and their style and culture reflects a lot of things in my life. I love the way the clothes fit and get compliments on their stuff all the time. They’re about being young, looking good, and having fun.” As for spending an afternoon with a half-naked Ashley Sky: “She was so easy to work with,” Parsons said. “She’s a  pro and has been doing this for a while so she helped make sure I didn’t feel out of place.” And how did Parsons’ girlfriend feel about the shoot. “She was totally cool with it. She knows it’s business and didn’t have a problem at all.” Check out the video section for an exclusive look at the advertisement (and don’t forget to visit Buffalo David Bitton on the web).

Heather Mills, the ex-wife of Paul McCartney, was accused of abusing a Paralympic official after failing to qualify for the British Paralympic ski team. Her ex-husband could have used some of that anger while attempting to score a free T-shirt during the Nets-76ers game on Monday.

Jell-O Mold of Nick Saban’s Face to be Auctioned Off for Charity

Lovely Lady Of The Day

What luck! It’s our second edition of Throwback Thursday Lovely Lady of the Day (we kicked it off last week with Nicole Eggert) and it happens to be Alyssa Milano‘s birthday. Here’s a gallery of the former Miss Teen Steam. If you want someone a little more 2013, Alessandra Ambrosio is the hottest reindeer ever and Eliza Kapp has me rooting for the Saints this weekend.

Jerry Jones Trolled by High School Football Team (and rather well)

I already mentioned my favorite hockey sweaters of the year. This is my favorite sweatshirt. And if you’re wondering, this is my favorite t-shirt.

Memorable Sports Billboards

On Thursday, this billboard was erected along I-43 in Milwaukee, courtesy of the fans at SaveOurBucks.com. The group wants the team to fully commit to losing in order to snag one of the potential franchise-changing players in the upcoming NBA Draft. The Bucks currently have the NBA’s worst record at 5-20. In the meantime, here are some other memorable sports-related billboards.

You Are Not Welcome Here

In one of my favorite NBA stories of the season, Thunder center Kendrick Perkins politely asked Bulls center Joakim Noah to leave the Oklahoma City locker room following last night’s game. And by politely, I mean he said, “Get your a– up out of here.” Noah had been invited by former teammate Thabo Sefolosha.

More Salt on the Wound

It’s been a nightmare first season for Jets quarterback Geno Smith (10 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, 62.9 QB rating) and now he has a new critic. Her name is Siri.

Lovely Lady Of The Day

Hot Clicks fan Josh emailed me all the way from Tokyo requesting I make Raquel Pomplun today’s LLOD. I see no reason not to comply with his request.

Now This is a Bobblehead

If I was a Giants fans I’d buy a ticket right now for the April 9 game against Arizona so I could get my hands on this amazing Hunter Pence bobblehead doll.

The Charmed Life

Not only is Rafael Nadal one of the world’s top tennis players, he also knows his way around the poker table. Nadal, who has only been playing for 18 months, defeated the world’s No. 1 poker player (Daniel Negreanu) in a charity tournament last weekend. But Negreanu is claiming the victory was all luck and wants a rematch. As for the charmed life headline, let’s not forget Nadal’s 2012 SI Swimsuit appearance with Bar Refaeli.

Where’s the Love?

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman is having a career year with 89 catches and 914 yards but he sure has a strange way of showing appreciation toward his quarterback. In October, he famously dissed Tom Brady‘s attempted high five on the sideline and yesterday he refused to acknowledge the nickname Mini-Tron given to him by No. 12.

Linebacker NaVorro Bowman nearly blew the game for the Niners while fielding an onside kick and then won it with one of the best pick six’s of the season. The game was the final regular season contest at Candlestick Park; the Niners will move into Levi’s Stadium next season. The New York Times has a solid profile of Candlestick, which housed the final Beatles concert in 1966. Unfortunately, the Beatles are no longer around so management went with the next best thing to close out the venue … Boyz II Men. The Philly natives sang It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday after the game.

Miss Fundamental Disses LeBron

Vanessa Macias, the girlfriend of Tim Duncan, did not like the fact that LeBron James started following her on Twitter and let the world know about it. Unfortunately for Macias, the person who followed her wasn’t actually James but rather a fan with the @LeBronJames username (LeBron’s actual username is @KingJames). An NBA Christmas

LeBron James :: Juan Ocampo/NBAE via Getty Images

LeBron James :: Juan Ocampo/NBAE via Getty Images

The NBA held its annual slate of Christmas games and the biggest story were the sleeved uniforms worn by all the teams. Both Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki and Knicks guard Beno Udrih went public with their dislike of the sleeves, though in Udrih’s case he was just looking for an excuse to justify this ugly three-point attempt. As for the games, the Knicks and Nets both got crushed, which is not good since they have the league’s two highest payrolls and are both 9-19 on the season. Tempers flared in the Warriors-Clippers game with a frustrated Blake Griffin accusing Golden State of playing “cowardly basketball” after luring him into two cheap technical fouls. Russell Westbrook was the star of the day for not only recording a triple-double but rocking these leather overalls and “killin it” beanie to the game while LeBron James and Dwyane Wade added to their highlight reel in a victory over the Lakers.

Getting in the Christmas Spirit

I’m sure more of these stories will come out in the next few days but Dwight Howard and Robert Griffin III made some friends in their locker rooms on Christmas. The Redskins quarterback hooked his offensive linemen up with XBox Ones while the Rockets center purchased high-end watches for his teammates.

Carlton Fisk and Lou Piniella :: Neil Leifer/SI

Carlton Fisk and Lou Piniella :: Neil Leifer/SI

Carlton Fisk turns 66 today. In this photo, Fisk tags Lou Piniella during a 1976 Red Sox-Yankees game. The collision started one of the most famous bench-clearing brawls in baseball history, as described in this Aug. 1978 profile of Red Sox pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee, who was famously injured in the fight (see video section below for footage of brawl).

“On the night of May 20, 1976, while backing up home plate in Yankee Stadium, Lee unwisely took part in a full-scale rumble, the results of which nearly cost him his left arm, not to mention his career. While trying to prevent the Yankees’ Otto Velez from joining the fray, Lee was punched by Mickey Rivers, and then grabbed from behind by Graig Nettles and heaved to the ground on his shoulder. At that point, films show, Rivers pounded away at Lee under a mountain of bodies. When Lee finally was able to get up and throw a punch, his arm was shot. Nonetheless, he went after Nettles, who opened up with both fists, and Lee was hammered into a bloody pulp. Because of his assault on Lee, Rivers has been pelted with racial epithets, bottles, bolts and firecrackers in Fenway, and Lee still wonders if his shoulder is all there. “I don’t think the Yankees started the fight to get me,” Lee says, “but once it started, I know there were a few Yankees looking for me. My opinions may have caught up with themselves.” A long time before the fight, Lee had described the Yankees’ gladiatorial prowess as the equal of “a bunch of hookers swinging their purses.”

Odds and Ends

Gilbert Arenas is training for a NBA return … The Cowboys signed 41-year-old Jon Kitna to be their third string QB. Kitna will donate the $53,000 he’ll make on Sunday to Lincoln High School in his native Tacoma, Wash., where he’s been teaching math for the past couple years … Randy Moss thinks he could still put up 15 or 16 touchdowns if he were playing in the NFL … The biggest box office bombs of 2013.

Ricky Henderson Turns 55

Rickey Henderson turned 55 on Wednesday and if any athlete deserves their own birthday photo gallery, it’s Rickey. Tom Verducci wrote a great profile of Henderson in 2003 full of funny anecdotes. This is my favorite:

“Over 24 seasons in the major leagues, Henderson never spent his meal money. Before each trip players get an envelope filled with cash equal to the daily rate as negotiated by the players’ association ($73 this year), multiplied by the number of days on the road. Henderson would take the envelopes home and put them in shoe boxes. Whenever one of his three daughters did well in school, Henderson would allow them to choose an envelope from a shoe box, a little game he called Pick It. The jackpot was getting an envelope from one of those 13-day, four-city trips. The girls would keep the money. ”They do what they want with it,” he said. “It gives them motivation for their school and something to do, like a job.”

(Throwback) Lovely Lady Of The Day

It’s time for another installment of Throwback Thursday LLOD. I took requests on Twitter and the overwhelming favorite was Tiffani Thiessen. As always, send your Lovely Lady of the Day suggestions, throwback or otherwise, to me on Twitter @AndyGray35.

Brandon Boykin and LeSean McCoy :: Drew Hallowell/Getty Images

Steelers fans are steaming that the refs missed this call, which could’ve led to a penalty, a possible Chiefs win, and a playoff berth for Pittsburgh. … Eagles running back LeSean McCoy won the World Heavyweight Championship of rushing and found one NBA star jealous of his title belt … Browns coach Rob Chudzinski was fired, which some players agreed with and others didn’t … Quarterback Cam Newton led the Panthers to the No. 2 seed in the NFC and also gave this young fan a lifelong memory … Rams defensive tackle Kendall Langford was ejected from the game against Seattle after accidentally hitting a referee … Saints wide receiver Lance Moore and Chargers running back Danny Woodhead had the day’s best celebration dances … Nobody came to MetLife Stadium for yesterday’s Giants-Redskins game … Jerry Jones had a rough night on Sunday … A very early look at the Top 10 picks of the 2014 NFL Draft.

A Mile High

The Denver Post had a big feature in yesterday’s paper about athletes and pot, which included the revelation from Nuggets executive Rex Chapman: a member of the team was high the morning of a 2010 playoff game. I don’t want to point any fingers so check out the roster and decide for yourself who the player in question is.

Boyz II Men/Aaron Rodgers Update

I am happy to announce the beef between Boys II Men and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially squashed. In. September 2012, Rodgers agreed to wear an Alex Smith jersey for a week if the Packers lost their season-opener to the 49ers (which they did by a score of 30-22). But Rodgers refused to wear the jersey, saying the incident got “blown way out of proportion” and ”it was at best a joke between friends.” TMZ caught up with Boys II Men member Wanya Morris, who forgave Rodgers and because ”it’s all good, life is life.”

Lovely Lady Of The Day

Maxim has a poll up to determine this year’s Maxim 100 and one girl who caught my eye was Noureen Dewulf, who stars in FX’s Anger Management. Not only is she married to Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, but also she grew up in the same town (Stone Mountain, Ga.) as the Jake “The Snake” Roberts. That alone is reason to make Dewulf today’s LLOD.

Good Sportsman or Bad Sportsman?

Sixers forward Evan Turner threw down a huge and completely unnecessary last-second dunk against the Lakers on Sunday, then realized he shouldn’t have done it and immediately apologized to them. As you can see in the video, several members of the Lakers were less than pleased with Turner’s action.

Move Over, Jon Kitna

A lot was made last week about 41-year-old Jon Kitna leaving his job as a high school math teacher to join the Cowboys for yesterday’s game (and donating his $53,000 game check to the school). The Indianapolis Star has a great story on 23-year-old minor league pitcher Alex Meyer, who also works as a substitute teacher at Greensburg High School making $63/day.

SI Vault Photo of the Day

LeBron  James :: Michael J. LeBrecht II/SI

LeBron James :: Michael J. LeBrecht II/SI

He may currently be the world’s best basketball player, but in February 2002 LeBron James was still a relatively unknown high schooler when SI put him on its cover with the headline, “The Chosen One.” As James celebrates his 29th birthday, we look back on Grant Wahl‘s profile of the 17-year-old prodigy.

“Then again, the world behind the velvet rope is nothing new to LeBron. Last summer he was the only schoolboy invited to play in Jordan’s top-secret workouts in Chicago. LeBron speaks regularly with Boston Celtics star Antoine Walker, who is his best friend among NBA players. Those floor tickets to the Cavaliers game? LeBron’s surrogate father, Eddie Jackson, simply made a call to Cleveland coach John Lucas. Already LeBron has hung out withMichael Finley, Tracy McGrady and Jerry Stackhouse, to say nothing of his favorite rapper, Jay-Z. “He’s a cool guy too,” LeBron says. “We went to his hotel first, and then I had backstage passes.” Did we say LeBron just turned 17?
